How do you manage supplement ingredient compliance across countries with different regulations?
Multi-Country Ingredient Compliance
Managing multi-country ingredient compliance starts before formulation begins. At project initiation, we ask clients to specify their target markets so we can align the formula and ingredient selection with all applicable regulatory frameworks simultaneously — rather than formulating first and checking compliance later.
Our approach combines three layers: formulation-stage screening against each target market's permitted and restricted ingredient lists; ongoing monitoring of regulatory changes in key markets including the US, EU, UK, Australia (TGA), and GCC states; and cross-referencing between markets to identify ingredients that satisfy all targets versus those requiring market-specific formulation variants.
Common areas where regulations diverge include permitted dosage ranges for vitamins and minerals, classification of botanical ingredients (food versus medicine), colorant and additive restrictions, and health claim substantiation requirements. When an ingredient is permitted in one target market but restricted in another, we can develop parallel formulation variants that maintain consistent product positioning while respecting each market's regulations.
